Content management systems - beware!

Lately I have been using a number of website content management systems, changing or adding content to various customers' websites. I am sure that the providers of each system promised outstanding ease of use, but my experience is usually at odds with that.
It feels as though some CMS platforms are great for web developers, because they can save time compared to the way they used to work, but that for lay people there's just too much techie stuff to do - even when a CMS promises great things. I hate to think how many hours I have spent lately trying to get content to appear the way it should.
So if you are looking for a content management system, be sure to use it before you make your decision. Is it easy to make changes? Does the text editor work well or is it a pain to get the text to appear the way you want to? How easy is it to add pictures - and to get them to appear where you want them on the page? Is it easy to create new pages, or do you have a complicated process to go through to set up the page and navigation?
A good CMS can deliver flexibility and long term savings, but a bad one can be a recipe for frustration. 'Try before you buy' is essential.
