Introductory Certificate in Marketing course
The Introductory Certificate in Marketing provides an excellent grounding in essential marketing issues - even if you are in a job that is outside of a marketing department, for example if you work in sales or customer service. Of course, it is also an excellent first step in developing marketing skills and knowledge if you are at the beginning of a career in marketing.
It is not necessary to have any previous experience or knowledge of marketing as the course will give you a foundation in the function of marketing and its role in an organisation. Core subjects like the four Ps of the marketing mix (product, price, place and promotion), ways to understand more about customers and methods for communicating with customers are all included in the course.
Who is it for?
The typical profiles of people who might take this qualification could include:
- Those undertaking junior marketing, secretarial or administrative roles.
- Individuals in jobs with some marketing involvement.
- Event management assistants.
- Personal assistants.
- Customer service assistants and call centre employees.
- Non-marketers wanting to develop a broader knowledge or understanding of marketing or to move into marketing.
- People taking a marketing apprenticeship.
Course content and assessment
Our Introductory Certificate course is run across two units as follows:
What is Marketing? This unit provides a backdrop to the importance of marketing in terms of what marketing is and how it is defined. It focuses on the role of marketing, its cross-functional importance and its contribution to business success. It also looks at the role of marketing as a service provider within the organisation.
Understanding Customer Relationships. This unit focuses on developing an understanding of internal and external customers, and considers how a knowledge and understanding of customers can assist in designing appropriate marketing activities to engage and support customers to achieve long-term customer loyalty.
Both units have their own assessment as follows:
- What is Marketing? - one-hour online test.
- Understanding Customer Relationships - written assignment.

"I had to do a presentation for a second interview for a new job today on how I would go about marketing a new service. Much of what went into that presentation came from what I learnt in the CIM qualification I studied with Marketing Ability. And I got the job! Thanks, Bob and Yvonne.
I'm very glad indeed that I studied with the CIM - I had plenty of experience before but having a framework to put that experience into has made all the difference. I'd recommend it to anyone who wants to be the best marketer they can be."
