Studying with Peterborough College of Marketing: our approach

student

“Having been a student at various other establishments, it was a great pleasure to finally find a course that was delivered with excellent teaching techniques, fantastic student support and all within an excellent learning environment. It’s been a real pleasure learning with Marketing Ability.”

Joe Barrasso, Applied Energy (Diploma student)

Here is a summary of the way that we approach the task of providing CIM-accredited marketing courses:

1. A suitable blend of the theory and the practical.

Our tutors are all experienced trainers or academic educators, but they are also either practising marketers or they have a track record of successful marketing achievement. This means that the theory is backed up with practical examples.

2. Face-to-face tutorials.

Unlike with distance learning, at the tutorials you have opportunities to ask questions and get answers straight away. For many students, an organised schedule of tutorials also helps to overcome the difficulties of self-motivation that distance learning can bring.

3. Be involved in your own learning.

Our tutors deliver lively, interactive tutorials where you are encouraged to make a contribution. This gives you a chance to raise practical implications about the subjects that are being taught. In particular, you can discuss how you might make changes in your current role as a result of the tutorial content.

4. Evening classes in an excellent environment.

All our evening and weekend tutorials are held at the Marriott Hotel, Peterborough. We have chosen this venue as it has excellent training room facilities, easy access to Peterborough city centre and the A1 and ample free parking. (There’s even free tea and coffee at each tutorial.)

5. Additional support from your tutors.

We recognise that you will be combining your studies with the pressures of work and home life, so we try to give you all the support you need:

Access to tutors by email and phone. After most tutorials, your tutor will send you an email containing links to valuable information about the subjects covered. You can also email or call your tutors for answers to any particular questions.
Online resources. A ‘web log’ facility is used by tutors to give you useful information including summaries of the subjects covered at the tutorials.

6. A clear study schedule to support your own reading.

A lesson plan is issued at the start of each module. This will let you read up on any subjects before each tutorial, if that’s your preferred study method. It will also help you plan your study if you are unable to attend any of the tutorials.

7. Help to catch up if you miss a tutorial.

If you miss a tutorial your tutor will give you a copy of any handouts and slides that you missed. He/she will also be available to answer any questions you might have about the subjects covered in the missed tutorial.

8. The chance to learn from your fellow students.

Our emphasis on practical marketing examples includes learning from each other too. Most tutorials will include group exercises where you can swap stories about the way that organisations you have worked for have carried out their marketing activity.

9. Regular assessment throughout the course.

Our tutors set questions and exercises so that you can keep track of how well you are doing. Feedback from your tutors will help you to decide where to focus your study.

10. Practice in taking exams (where applicable).

Although most students choose the written assignment route for the Certificate and Diploma courses, you can still opt for the examination assessment method. Also, examinations are compulsory on the Postgraduate course. So if you are taking exams, our tutors will give you a programme of sample questions so that by the time you get to the real thing you are prepared in exam technique, as well as the subject matter.
